CHAPTER TEN

After hanging up the phone with Merrick, Boyd made another call. Merrick was a brilliant software engineer, programmer, and hacker, but he didn’t understand how to motivate people or how to delegate. Boyd had influential contacts, and friends, and people who would do just about anything for him. He needed to call in a few favors now. As soon as Hank came on the line, Boyd quickly filled him in on what was going on as he sped to the Jersey Shore.

Hank owned a private security firm, and although Boyd didn’t feel it was necessary to retain his services full-time, he still used Hank’s people when the need seemed valid. After giving him the briefest of run-downs, he told him to get some men together and to stand by for further instructions. Whatever would be going down could happen as early as tonight.

What was the point of being a billionaire if he couldn’t use his money to arrange a special ops mission? That bastard who thought he could mess with Boyd Stanley wouldn’t know what hit him.

As he drove into the house, he clicked the buzzer to access the gate and then punched in a key code to leave it open. If Hank sent anyone, he wouldn’t want to have them wait at the gate. He wasn’t worried about being attacked—that was the kidnapper’s problem, or soon would be.

Taking the private road on the secluded stretch of the Jersey Shore, he finally arrived at the “beach house” — a small, ten-room home directly facing the ocean, and the place where he and Merrick got a lot of work done. Boyd had a penthouse in Manhattan, but he hated being there. At least here, Merrick was usually around, and, even though the house was private, they still saw people who wandered up and down the public beach.

Merrick was waiting for him when he pulled into the driveway.

“You’re not going to believe this,” Merrick said as he walked with Boyd back up the steps and into the house. The front door was open, and every computer screen and television monitor in the entire “nerve center” was turned on. Merrick had been busy.

“What do you got?” Boyd asked, as he went straight to the bar and pulled himself a tall whiskey.

He looked out through the cavernous open room and through the floor-to-ceiling windows to catch a last glimpse of the darkening Atlantic.

“I ran the plate,” Merrick said. “The car is owned by XMPT Industries, LLC. It’s a shell company, of course, and all the owners were hidden, of course. But I did some advanced hacking and discovered something very interesting. XMPT appears to be owned in part by JCS LLC, which was less carefully hidden. JCS stands for John Cecil Schwartzman, a man clearly connected with organized crime. So…” Merrick said, taking a deep breath before continuing, “considering that, and the fact that you said the kidnapper was a large black man, I concluded that since JCS is an American Jew, then obviously it wasn’t him.
